WRITE AN ARTIST STATEMENT
With Create Appalachia & Katie Hoffman
Wednesday, May 8 1:30-3:30 PM
Cost: $25
Location: Art Lab – Digital Lab
Minimum 4 people. Maximum 12 people.
(Please register 1 week prior)
Creatives of all genres need to be able to market themselves effectively. In “Writing an ‘About’ or Artist Statement,” Katie Hoffman will help you create one of the main building blocks for a basic media. A strong statement will provide important insight into your work, allowing potential clients and patrons to connect with you and develop appreciation for how and why you do what you do. It can also serve as the “about” page for a website. This document outlines the themes, influences, and philosophies of your work. Whether you’re an artisan farmer raising heirloom sheep, a filmmaker, a game designer, or a painter hoping to place your work in a gallery, this document is a marketing must-have.
Those who register at least three days before the session will receive an email ahead of time with some idea-generation activities. A handout will be provided at the session for those who sign up later. You’ll learn to avoid vague, fluffy, confusing “artspeak.” You’ll brainstorm and develop a few clear reasons why a potential client or collector should consider your work. You’ll emerge from this session with bullet points that you can use to draft a statement that reflects your passion and helps others engage with you and your work.
