Fundamentals of Needle Felting

Learn all about the basics of needle felting!

If you are interested in needle felting but don’t know where to start this is the class for you! In this class students will learn the basics of how to create sculptures with wool.  Students will learn how to make basic 2D and 3D shapes as well as how to use different needles and wool to achieve various fun effects.  At the end of the class students will be able to put together their own needle felted creations.

Instructor: Lindy Bruns moved to Abingdon from New Orleans three years ago and started exploring the world of wool sculptures during the pandemic.  Lindy has been a fabric and textile artist for over 15 years and received her MFA in Theater Design from the University of New Orleans in 2013.  She has designed and built costumes and art pieces for both stage and screen.  Most recently her felting has won awards art both the Gloucester Daffodil Festival Fine Craft Show and Blowing Rock Art in the Park.

 

Natural and Indigo Dyeing with Stephen Curd

Ages 16-adult

In this explorational class you will learn about indigo dyeing and other natural dyes through the dip dyeing process. Learn folding techniques to create unique dye patterns and more! Dyeing supplies and cotton bandanas provided. To dye shirts, students must indicate what size organic cotton shirt they need from Dharma Trading: https://www.dharmatrading.com/clothing/canvas-unisex-jersey-t-shirt.html

Art Lab will make an order and pre-wash the shirts to prepare them for dyeing. To ensure your t-shirt arrives in time, registration occurs 10 days prior to the start of class. Individuals can register after this day, but may not receive a t-shirt. All attendees will receive bandanas to dye.

 

Digital Fabric Design 

Monday, 10/30 from 4pm-6pm

$25 for Non-Members, $20 for Members

Minimum 2 students. Maximum 10 students.

Appropriate for ages 16-adult.

This workshop provides an introduction to Photoshop and drawing tablets. Participants will be guided through steps to create unique designs and repeatable patterns to be printed on fabric using Spoonflower.com. Attendees are encouraged to bring sketches and other reference material as inspiration for their designs. Time permitting, students will also receive an introduction to Canva, a free design platform that can be used with fabric print design. Register 48 hours in advance.

 

Vintage Textiles & Botanical Block Printing

Minimum 5 students. Maximum 10 students

Ages 16-adult

In this class you will learn the steps to carving a beautiful botanical-inspired easy-cut linoleum block. Don’t feel like carving? Borrow a pre-carved block to use during class! then you will be guided through the printing process to breathe new life into reclaimed vintage linens. This class is taught by Beka Addison, a regional artist whose creative focus is printmaking and fiber arts. Learn about Beka’s process, explore your own creative style, and enjoy a cozy, fall-inspired beverage while you work! Supplies provided.
