Heritage Express

History comes alive with Heritage Express! Designed as a companion to our award-winning VanGogh Outreach program, this Museum experience immerses students in the history of the Great Road and the early pioneering spirit that brought settlers to the mountains of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee through a close examination of objects made in the region in those earliest days of settlement.

Heritage Express is tailored to the fourth grade curriculum and utilizes the Museum’s permanent collection and hands-on art activities to reinforce students’ understanding of and appreciation for their own cultural heritage.

How It Works:

Each visit lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes and consists of three parts:

1. Guided tour of the Betsy K. White Cultural Heritage Gallery

2. Guided tour of WKMA’s rotating exhibits

3. Hands-on art project based on the objects in the Betsy K. White Cultural Heritage Gallery. Instructors may choose between a hand-built pottery piece or a paper crazy quilt.

Groups are limited to no more than 60 students, divided into 3 groups of 20. An optional space for lunch is available at no additional cost. Teachers will be provided with pre-visit tips and activities related to their Museum visit.
