Exhibit Details

Touching the Sacred focuses on imagery from two branches of Christianity – the Orthodox and the Catholic – spanning geographical regions from Russia to Ethiopia to central Mexico. These gloriously creative representations of Biblical characters began as a teaching device for the believers, many of whom were unable to read. The narratives often merged with pagan beliefs in order to spread the Christian Word, and the images soon became venerated as icons holding a sacred power such as healing or blessing.

This exhibition depicts saints, angels, and the Holy Family in a broad range of sculpture and painting. They reveal the diversity of folk traditions while adhering to the time-honored iconography of Biblical themes. From Byzantine icons to Mexican retablos, here the sacred is made real through evocative imagery and its compelling narrative.
