Teen Lab
Teen Lab takes participants through a variety of studio art and/or digital processes, art lectures, and art films to challenge thinking, build technical skills and support the development of creative voice. Required supplies: Notebook/sketchbook, pen/pencil, usb drive / cloud storage access.

Series 1: Studio Art
September 6 – Color Monotypes
Learn how to cut stencils, mix inks, and create unique imagery with layers of translucent color in this printmaking process.
September 13 – Repeatable Patterns
Learn how to make a simple repeatable pattern in carved linoleum that can be used to print fabric, wrapping papers, and more.
September 20 – Mixed Media Abstraction
Explore the many ways of abstraction in art using inks, watercolor, collage, sewing, and more.
September 27 – Repurposed Jewelry
Deconstruct and redesign! Use simple tools, glue, wire, beads, and other jewelry elements to make old from new.
Series 2: Film & Discussion and/or Writing
October 11 – Can Labor Be Art?
This session looks at art that doesn’t look like art. You will be introduced to Forklift Danceworks, and choreographer Allison Orr’s community dance project in which she collaborated with sanitation workers to make a unique performance.
October 18 – The Value of Waste
Artist Vik Muniz spent several years collaborating with “garbage pickers” to create unique works of art. In this session, learn about this creative process, relationships that were established, and lives that were transformed through the power of art.
October 25 – Dark and Fantastical
Just in time for Halloween! Explore the world of the Quay Brothers, twin filmmakers known for their detailed peculiar film shorts featuring stop motion animation of machines, frankenstein-ed dolls, and other mysterious objects.
November 1 – We Belong Here
Watch a brief documentary looking at some of the UK’s top poets, then share the work of a favorite poet, yourself (or even poetry of your own!). Following prompts, you will generate creative writing to put in a simple pamphlet stitch book of your own making.
Series 3: Digital Art
November 8 – Digital Imaging
Learn to combine digital drawing/painting and digital photography using Photoshop to complete a unique, creative image of your own design.
November 15 – Silent Film (Video) Short 1
Make a film short using found props and yourself or classmates as actors. Collaborate to create a story line with beginning, middle, and end, each segment lasting only a few minutes. Next, learn how to make simple edits to your short including music, sound effects, credits, and more.
November 22 – Silent Film (Video) Short 2

November 29 – Painting With Light
Learn the basics of “painting with light” using long exposure digital photography!
