Using a visual image as a jumping off point for writing is known as Ekphrasis, and it is a wonderful way for examining with a new eye. This workshop will allow us to explore and be inspired by the portraits in the exhibit, “Contemplating Character.” Participants will visit the exhibit three times, each time focusing on a different section of the exhibit. They will choose a portrait that we respond to and study it while being led through a guided meditation. Afterwards, they will write. After each writing time there will be an opportunity to share aloud pen strokes upon the page that create an illustration for others to hear. Participants will be able to choose whether they wish to share what they have written, and there will be no judgment made upon what is shared – just appreciation for the wonderful art that participants have created.
