William King Museum of Art will document 18th or 19th century original muzzleloader long rifles. Register below, there are no appointment times, come as you please and enjoy Documentation Day and “The Long Rifle in Virginia” exhibition. Guests are allowed to bring no more than 3 rifles for documentation. 

 

 

**Please ENSURE rifles are unloaded and secure before entering museum premises! All rifles MUST be unloaded and secure to enter! DO NOT BRING LOADED OR VOLATILE RIFLES ONTO THE PREMISES! RIFLE MUST BE CLEAN OF ALL POWDER AND VOID OF ALL AMMUNITION.**

 

“The Long Rifle in Virginia” is an exhibition of William King Museum of Art’s Cultural Heritage Project. It is the 45th exhibition derived from the project’s field survey. Since it began in 1994, this first-time documentation project has recorded over 4000 objects made by hand in Southwest Virginia & Northeast Tennessee prior to 1940.  These records are kept in the museum’s permanent archive and are used to create original exhibitions showcasing the rich heritage of this region.  The long rifles documented in the April 2 Documentation Day will be added to the museum’s Cultural Heritage Archive.  

Special Guest Researcher: Wallace B. Gusler, renowned scholar of 18th century firearms and retired master gunsmith and curator of furniture and firearms at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

 

**DO NOT BRING LOADED OR VOLATILE RIFLES ONTO THE PREMISES!**
