About the Exhibition

Stardust Rising will showcase work by the award winning and internationally known illustrator Charles Vess. The exhibition will coincide with the release of the major motion picture Stardust. Vess is a local artist living in Abingdon, whose talents have earned him international fame as an illustrator for comic books and fantasy writings. Stardust, a graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Vess, is currently in production to become a major motion picture scheduled for international release. The exhibition at the Arts Center will showcase a wide array of objects from Vess’s own collection of work as well as objects/artwork used in the creation of the novel.

Tuesday Nights – July 31, August 7 & 14 , 6-8:30 pm, $35 adults/$15 children 6-15. Life Size Faeries to Go! Make your own life-size faerie! Workshop for parent and child.

Thursdays, July 12 – August 23, 6 pm FREE! Favorite Film Nights. Special film series featuring the favorites of Charles Vess. Bring the kids! Films appropriate for children will be shown along with those for adults. Note: Films will not be shown on Aug. 2.

Thursday, August 2 Preview Premier Gala for “Stardust” the Movie. Abingdon’s Appalachian Sustainable Development, William King Regional Arts Center and the Washington County Public Library will celebrate Charles Vess and the opening of Stardust at a fundraising event – Hollywood Red Carpet Style.

Saturday, September 1, 11 am-4 pm Workshops. Experiment with make up, mask making, wands and staffs, headdresses fit for maidens, princes, dragons, gnomes and other magical creatures to prepare for the Stardust Festival on Sept. 8!

September 8, 11 am-4 pm, $10 adults, $5 children 5-15 years old; STARDUST FESTIVAL: A magical festival, inspired by Charles Vess and other creative artists of our area and made possible with the assistance of Faerie Magazine’s Kim Cox, featuring dancing, concerts, costume contests, tree plantings and more. Vendors selling artful masks and costume pieces, jewelry, and FOOD! Faerie guided exhibition tours on the hour. Photo opportunities in Faerieland Corner.
