Day at the Downs A Kentucky Derby Party

Abingdon, Virginia (May 3, 2011) – William King Museum: Center for Art and Cultural Heritage is hosting a Day at the Downs party on Saturday, May 7, 2011. Come and enjoy a day at the races at The Martha Washington Hotel and Spa from 4 to 7pm.

Derby party attendees will enjoy the fun and tradition of Churchill Downs right here in Southwest Virginia. Come dressed in your festive Derby attire and enjoy delicious heavy hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and music. Also included are a ladies’ hat parade, best dressed gentleman, a horse pick em’ window, silent auction and more. All of which will be followed by the 137th Run for the Roses on the big screen, “The Greatest Two Minutes in SportsTM”!

The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, held annually in Louisville, KY, on the first Saturday in May. The race is one and a quarter miles at Churchill Downs and often is called “The Run for the Roses,” since the winner is draped with a blanket of roses. It is the first leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and is followed by the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

Day at the Downs tickets are $75 per person and will be available through April 30th. Space is limited, so purchase your tickets early. For more information or to buy tickets, please contact Deb Kerr 276-628-5005 ext. 111 or dkerr@wkmuseum.org.

All proceeds from Day at the Downs will support programming at the William King Museum.
